Newport to Bermuda Race 2022
On Friday June 17 more than 200 boats will race from Newport, RI traveling more than 650 miles, including a crossing of the gulf stream and finishing in Bermuda. Aboard one of those boats will be 4 graduates of the Quissett Yacht Club Jr. Sailing program and this year's Jr. Committee chairman.
Our ride is Lola, a 43' J/130 owned by Jon and Katy Burt. She can be found during the season tucked behind Grassy Island in the inner harbor. This will be Lola's 3rd Newport to Bermuda race and the second under Jon Burt's command. Jon grew up around the harbor and was involved in the QYC Jr. Sailing program in the 1970's and 80's.
Aboard will be 3 others who also are graduates of Quissett's Junior Program:
- Ethan Burt (Jon and Katy's son) was part of the QYC 420 team from 2017 - 2019.
- Ian Gordon learned in Quissett during the late 90's - early 00's.
- Bryan Gordon also learned his formative sailing skills in Quissett in the late 90's and early 00's.
And if that wasn't enough local talent aboard, Chris McGuire who is currently leading the Junior Committee will be aboard as well.
You can follow along with the race by going to www.bermudarace.com. There is a tracker app to watch the fleet's progress.
Additionally, Lola will be posting updates throughout the race. We will be able to provide the best way to get at these updates before the start of the race.
