A STRONG BREEZE FOR TWO BOATS

By ALAN HAIGH

Two crews participated in Quissett Yacht Club’s second August, Wednesday series race: Randy and Ann Evans in Penguin, and Chuck and Tom First in Allie Rose. While the series’ 5:15 start time can offer sailors a chance for a more moderate wind, this day’s southerly breeze was fresh enough that the race committee set a G course in the lee of Penzance Point. The starting line was about half way between racing markers S and A.

Both boats had clean starts and crossed within 3 seconds of the horn at the committee boat end of the line. Allie Rose led from the beginning, and gradually increased her lead over the five legs of the race. The wind was measured between 13 and 15 knots, with gusts up to 17 knots, but the race committee felt the this reading was probably on the low side. Penguin’s crew did not set a spinnaker on the downwind legs, while Allie Rose’s crew did, and commented that it felt like they were “on the edge”.
