Sunday brought a beautiful morning after a night of impressive thunder, lightning and rain. The intrepid Quissett Junior racers spent some time bailing out dinghies and Herreshoffs before setting sail and heading out to the bay. The wind was out of the northwest at about 4-7 mph. The course was set with D being the windward mark and a drop mark was used as the leeward mark, in place of E.
The Race Committee, made up of Katy Tynan, Sean Tynan and Wendy Martyna had the racers sail the course leaving the marks to starboard. Since the wind was light, jibing after rounding the windward mark was not a problem. Plus it gave the racers a change of pace from what they are used to during their Opti and 420 races.
The starboard end of the line was favored slightly but at about 1 minute into the starting sequence, the wind shifted giving the port the tactical advantage. Both skippers realized this and made the bold move of crossing the starting line on a port tack. When the final horn sounded indicating the start of the race, it took Sea Glass, skippered by Anna Olsen with Alden Burt as crew, 35 seconds to cross the line followed by skipper Ethan Burt and crew Hadley Smith in Tag Along.
Both skippers were able to reach the mark in great time with Tag Along maintaining good boat speed and passing Sea Glass. Both skippers displayed safe jibing form around the windward mark. Tag Along was roughly 2 boat lengths ahead of Sea Glass and maintained that lead throughout the rest of the course.
Both skippers have a win under their belt and are tied for first place. The next Junior race will be held Sunday August 14th with the winner of that race clinching the series. Good luck!
