Katy Burt Claims McMurtrie Trophy
By DOUG JONES
This past Sunday afternoon the Quissett Yacht Club held the H-12 McMurtrie Trophy for “lady skippers 35 years or older”, with five boats competing for this noble prize. A light 5-8 knot northerly prompted the Race Committee of Sam McMurtrie, Alden Burt, Ethan Burt, and Doug Jones to set a temporary windward mark 1/3 mile to the north of the starting mark, and posted a course of XQX. Despite one complaint that the course was too long, there was tight competition throughout and top honors were won by consistent, excellent sailing. In fact, this may have been one of the most nerve-wracking wire-to-wire victories in a while.
Katy and Jon Burt in Tag Along, Betsy Evans and Bill Armstrong in Penguin, and Nina and Andy Hocker in Dory Too all had excellent starts while Weatherly Dorris and Mort Saunders in Found It were forced to tack around to avoid hitting the Cornelia Carey. Tag Along had the best boat speed and quickly established a short lead, while Ali Rodin and Steve Chalmers in Sea Breeze seemed poised to take advantage of better wind inshore. Shortly after the start, the wind began to lighten and puffs and lifts were desperately sought. By the windward mark, Tag Along had established a solid lead over Penguin and Dory Too. Certainly the commentary aboard the committee boat made for an extremely entertaining afternoon as the two sons of Tag Along’s skipper critiqued and cheered on their mother, particularly as her lead began to dwindle. Slowly Penguin moved closer and closer on the long upwind leg with Tag Along carefully covering each tack. On the final run to the finish, Penguin looked poised to blanket Tag Along and make for an exciting finish; however, Tag Along was able to gybe over to port and grab some clear air and coast to victory with Penguin wishing the race were only a little bit longer.
