Three Quissett S boats (Coyote, Radiant and Teaticket) and twelve Quissett S boat sailors (Eric Karplus, Christos Karplus, Josh Bernstein, Sydney Kiedeisch, Douglas Cooper, Kathy Cooper, Jeff Whittle, David Michaelson, Alan Haigh, Sylvia Haigh, Jeffrey Keith, and Ben Morris) met in Larchmont NY on Long Island Sound to compete in the opening regatta of the Herreshoff S Class Centennial Series. Boats arrived by tractor trailer and sailors by car, train, boat, and airplane. Their competition were seven S boats from Western Long Island Sound, four from Narragansett Bay and one from Virginia, a total of 15.

Saturday offered a two hour no wind delay and one short drifter with Christos Karplus in Coyote pulling out an excruciating fourth.

Sunday presented a fresh breeze from the northwest allowing the RC to run four competitive races. After struggling in the first two races Quissett boats came alive as Coyote sailed fast for the win and Teaticket grabbed third. The fourth and final race of the day saw Teaticket take second by a nose over Radiant in third.

Racing resumes this weekend with a long distance race on Friday and more buoy racing Saturday and Sunday. More Quissett sailors (Ham Lord and George Hunnewell) will arrive on Friday as crew to replace those committed elsewhere.

Here’s wishing the Quissett boats and crew the best of luck!
